How Long Do Cats Live?

Posted on

They say cats have nine lives, but have you ever wondered what the average lifespan for a pet cat is? Or how old the oldest cat was to have ever lived? Considering their small size, cats can live for an incredibly long time! Find out everything in our new Sunday blog!

There are a lot of variables that can have an impact on how long a cat can live. Just like humans, a healthy life style is important if you have ambitions to brake any age record! A good diet, healthcare and the environment they live in play a big role. Spayed or neutered cats tend to live longer because they are less likely to roam and it prevents reproductive diseases.

Some domestic cats can live to up to 20 years old. The oldest cat to have ever lived was 38 years old. Yes, you read that correctly, 38 years! Creme Puff was a domestic cat from Austin, Texas. His owner also owned the previous oldest cat record holder, who made it to the age of 34! These are record breaking numbers, but the average life expectancy for an indoor cat is around 13 to 17 years.

If you compare it with humans, when cats are around 7-10 years old, this is the human equivalent of someone in their mid-forties to mid-fifties. This also means they can show some signs of starting to slow down and even put on some weight. Don’t forget the yearly check-up with your vet!

Once they get older than 10 years old, you can compare it with a human age of 70 years old. This means they might need more mental stimulation to keep them happy. As stated before, these numbers are just averages. Who knows, your cat may become the new record holder?
